Leadership Development in Sport
Football is a global business, a financial power house generating revenues that dwarf many of the leading commercial enterprises. But the current average tenure of a football manager is less than 2 years, resulting in substantial compensation payments by clubs, money that could otherwise have been invested in the development of the game.
In order to reduce these costs there needs to be an understanding as to why so many managers are dismissed so quickly. The key issues are often a lack of leadership and man management skills, allied to poor communication skills and the inability to have a continuing positive influence on those around him. The majority of managers have had limited formal coaching in the art of leadership and invariably rely on learnt behaviour, derived from the managers that they have worked under. In most case, a sacked manager is replaced by another sacked manager, who himself carries the scar tissue of previous failure, and so the cycle is repeated. Rarely does the sacking of a manager have a dramatic impact on results, with many clubs finishing further down their respective league. They say that ‘if you keep on doing what you are doing, you will keep on getting what you are getting.’ Talking to Q4 Management could be the first step on a journey of change.
