Sport has a tendency to ignore this requirement when appointing one of the most important positions within the business i.e. the manager. Often with limited due diligence undertaken and within a very short time frame, a 1st team manager will be identified, recruited and set to work. They have little or no time to assimilate to the culture and workings of the club, the complexion of the Board, the nuance of internal relationships, not to mention the dressing room environment. As a consequence the failure rate is extremely high, far higher than any commercial business could tolerate, and the costs attendant with failure can be punishing to the club in question.
The implementation of a Manager Mentoring programme could make a significant contribution to the chances of sustained success. With the manager being given unfettered access to an experienced mentor, someone who is totally independent and anonymous, someone with whom trust can be established and confidentiality guaranteed, particularly in the first three to six months of the appointment, could be a club’s most valuable investment.
